The more a reader learns about a word—its sound-to-spelling structure, its meaning, and how it functions in a sentence—the more fluent the reader becomes. This is the principle underlying the Word Knowledge Network, the conceptual basis for Sortegories. Evidence supports the value of developing access to word meanings and functions along with learning the orthographic aspects of word knowledge. This session will feature Sortegories as a tool to support a multi-component approach. The session will also discuss generalizing the activities in Sortegories to other word-learning approaches and decodable text. Additionally, the session will explore the oral language foundation of this multi-component model.
